From Taiwan to the UK, which country has been the most successful in controlling the virus and how?

Written by: Halima K

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused leaders of the world to take drastic action in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus in their countries. But who was successful? I want to show you guys which countries have taken the lead and contained the virus.

So, will closing borders make a difference?

Canadian and many European officials said closing the borders will not make a difference. Let’s take a look at some countries that are already way ahead of the likes of the U.K, USA, and France, having successfully combated Covid and already returned to normal life, *sigh* must be nice.

Some would have guessed countries such as the U.K and U.S would have been the leaders in containing the virus and if you did you would be wrong, VERY WRONG!

Australia (28,850 cases, 909 deaths)

A lot more cases than New Zealand but having closed its borders to all countries but New Zealand since March 2020 they have now returned to normal social settings with schools and clubs being open. The use of a two-week hotel quarantine for travellers to stop a second wave had also slowed down the impact of the virus and allowed the curve of cases to flatten. PM Scott Morrison has definitely done well in dealing with the situation and getting his country back to a new normal.

Time to raise your eyebrows at this SHOCKER…

Taiwan (921 cases, 9 deaths)

Being located right next to China, where the virus is believed to have originated, Taiwan has been impacted the least by covid. If you’re as shocked as I am, I’m sure you’d like to know how they did it.

Well, this is how. They have implemented several measures including huge fines and digital healthcare systems but arguably the most effective measure the Taiwanese government put into place was the closing of the borders to foreign tourists since March 2020 after the possible risk of a second wave.

Numbers don’t lie…

Some would perhaps agree, that by closing the border, you are protecting the people on the inside from the deadly virus. In the next blog, we dive into which countries ignored this route *face palm* and are now severely affected.
